This week is also home to a few other console anniversaries. The PlayStation 2 hit store shelves for the first time when it released on March 4, 2000 in Japan. After releasing in North America and Japan the year prior, the Nintendo 64 finally made its way to Europe and Australia on March 1, 1997.
As talk of a link between crime and violent video games makes a resurgence in current events, a look at the history books reveals similar chatter. On Dec. 7, 1993, the first of two congressional hearings was held to address the release of games like Mortal Kombat, Night Trap and DOOM along with additional topics like rating systems, commercial ads targeted at children and even virtual reality. Senator Joe Lieberman, professor Eugene Povenzo and Sega of America vp Bill White were among those in attendance. The second hearing was held on March 5, 1994.
Noteworthy Releases, Anniversaries
Some big anniversaries are being celebrated this week. One of the last games Nintendo and Rare worked on together and one of the final releases on the Nintendo 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day turns 20 years old this week. A remake was released four years later and the original game was included in the Rare Replay compilation in 2015.
Zelda gets some love with Breath of the Wild and Twilight Princess HD both having bowed just a year apart, in 2017 and 2016 respectively. Other notable anniversaries include Mass Effect 3, Pokemon Black and White, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and the reboots of both Tomb Raider and SimCity.
