A new season of swashbuckling is nigh for Sea of Thieves, as developer Rare has announced an updated format to the multiplayer pirate adventure game, launching on Jan. 28.

The new format, explained via a blog post and new trailer, will introduce a progression system using a ranking system called Renown, which is gained by completing Trials and other events. Players will climb their way up through 100 levels of Renown, grouped into 10 progression tiers, with each level offering a perk, such as in-game items or currency.

“In addition to the Trading Company progression system that's been in the game since day one, Seasons will allow us to reward players for engaging with all aspects of the pirate life on the Sea of Thieves,” Rare said in its blog post. “This means you’ll never finish a Sea of Thieves session empty-handed; Renown can be earned in hundreds of different ways, and isn’t wholly dependent on handing in loot.”

The new Seasons format will also introduce a Battle Pass-style “optional premium” offering called the Plunder Pass. This extra set of premium items will “provide access to selected new items ahead of their full release, giving players the chance to obtain them early and at a significant discount before a future update makes them available for all players to buy from the Emporium,” Rare detailed in a separate blog post.

The Plunder Pass can be purchased in-game for 999 Ancient Coins (equivalent to $9.99), but Rare stressed in the blog post that “access to Seasons will not be gated through this Pass, and as is the case with all our updates, the Seasons updates will be free for all players.”
